Imagine a situation where you spent most of your life being told either that you were slow and stupid or that your brain didn’t work properly and that you would never be normal. And then in a matter of an hour or so you were given a strategy that would make you a better scholar than any of those so called “normal” people.

Making People Cry

Often when I taught accelerated learning techniques to people with learning difficulties everyone in the room would be reduced to tears. It is an amazing experience watching adults and children alike throw off their limiting beliefs and old strategies. I’ve just been told a story about my friend’s nine year-old stepdaughter and just how much impact you can have on your children.

I need to keep some of the details a little dark because it is a friend of mine and it would not be fair on the child to have her recognised through this article. So some of the personal details have been changed. All of the specific information about the intervention is as it was told to me.

This your girl, I’m going to call her Amy, was having problems at school. She is currently going through being diagnosed for ADHD and dyslexia. But to the family it is clear she needs some extra support for her school work.

Her stepfather told me that she was having problems with her reading, writing and spelling. She would try to read too fast and guess at words. Amy’s spelling was atrocious and she had no ability to recall the spelling of a word even moments after learning it.

So Amy’s stepfather grabbed a copy of the Spelling Strategy to see if would do her any good. He watched the video’s for himself first and then set about teaching Amy the techniques.

Accelerated Learning is as Easy as Cake

The first thing Amy tackled was reading. Just by slowing her down and giving her a way of focusing on the line instantly improved her reading ability. Then onto spelling. In about forty minutes Amy went from struggling to spell simple three and four letter words to being able to spell words well beyond her reading age. She was able to spell large complicated words backwards and forwards.

Apparently the only real struggle for her was about the anchoring technique that is part of the process. But once they had switched from a physical anchor to thinking about Grandma’s Christmas cake it all worked perfectly, The anchor is just there to create a feel good feeling for when they get the spelling right. This makes it a generative process and pulls people to wanting to succeed.

But State Management is Key

Amy was ecstatic and her stepfather moved to tears about how well she was doing so quickly. But sadly when her mom came home Amy didn’t quite manage to get it to quite work properly. Part of the issue is whilst this stuff looks like magic, it isn’t. It takes a little practice until you bed the strategy down and you start to do it automatically.

But by the next day Amy was fully equipped to totally amaze her teacher at school. She had practised enough to make sure her own excitement didn’t put her off. Here teacher was blown away with what Amy was capable of doing. When asked Amy told her teacher that her stepfather had taught her to think about her Grandmother’s Christmas cake and that meant she could spell.

Practice Like Riding a Bike

From here all Amy needs is a little consistent practice. Ten words a day for a week or so and the strategy becomes self-replicating. The more she does it the more she doesn’t have to do it. A bit like riding a bike really.  And once you can do that you can use the same strategy for lots of other things. When Amy gets to exam age she will be downloading massive amounts of knowledge into her memory in just minutes.
